Remember Mikaela? This 4th-grade firecracker graduated the Children’s Leadership Training Institute just last spring. What you might not know is that Mikaela’s mom, FLTI graduate Kim Dejan, is making waves too, turning her “Baking With A Purpose” project into free cooking classes for local kids — and sneaking in some essential life lessons along the way.
Thanks to you, dozens of parents across New Orleans have launched their own projects that make real, local impact. On May 2nd, you can keep the movement going.
Kim realized that students who don’t have a “traditional” college or career plan may not understand the possibilities that await them outside the box. She designed Baking With A Purpose to inspire teenagers to pursue their creative passions, and to promote entrepreneurship as a career option. Each session focuses on teaching critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and project planning along with confidence-building kitchen skills.
Baking With A Purpose is just one of the dozens of community-driven, community-led initiatives from OPEN’s program graduates. We believe parents like Kim already have the solutions — our work is to help them realize that vision.
Will you pledge to support them with a gift to OPEN this GiveNOLA Day?
