PRESS RELEASE: EDI Community Profile 2013

EDI 2013 Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ORLEANS PUBLIC EDUCATION NETWORK AND THE W.K. KELLOGG FOUNDATION, BAPTIST COMMUNITY MINISTRIES, GREATER NEW ORLEANS FOUNDATION, INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HYGIENE AND ENTERGY NEW ORLEANS FOUNDATION PRESENT SCHOOL READINESS MEASUREMENT FOR NEW ORLEANS

NEW ORLEANS — Feb. 6, 2013 — Orleans Public Education Network (OPEN), the Ready, Set, Go Advisory Council and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, today presented the findings of the Early Development Instrument (EDI) Community Profile for New Orleans. The EDI data collected demonstrates that New Orleans has increased school readiness, due largely to collaborative community efforts.
The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a population measure of how kindergarten age children are developing in communities, measuring five areas of early childhood development:

• Physical health and wellbeing
• Social competence
• Emotional maturity
• Language and cognitive skills
• Communication skills and general knowledge

EDI records data by neighborhood, ranking children as vulnerable, somewhat ready or very ready. “The EDI data from the 14 neighborhoods that have reached saturation shows that coordinated community investments are paying dividends,” said OPEN Executive Director, Deirdre Johnson Burel. “We are seeing decreased levels of severe vulnerabilities, for example neighborhoods like Central City, which ranks equal to or less than the national average of vulnerable children, show that we are defying the odds and showing that it does in fact take a village to raise a child.”

OPEN is one of 34 sites around the country implementing data collection by EDI. This is the first year the third year of EDI data collection in collaboration with Ready, Set, Go in New Orleans. The collaboration resulted in a successful data collection:

• 38 schools participated in 2012 across school type (charter, traditional direct run public and catholic schools).
• 1,844 student records were mapped. Data was collected on 59 percent of public school kindergartners.
• 14 neighborhoods reached saturation, meaning at least 70 percent of kindergartners in those communities reported EDI data, making the data sufficient to draw conclusions in those neighborhoods.

“This a collective effort and the data collection is only one part,” said Huilan Krenn, program officer for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. “We want to change the odds of children growing up in this city and it takes systemic investment. There is an incredible collaborative of funders supporting this work, data collection and community investment because we know that’s what’s required to significantly improve the outcomes of children and families.”

OPEN’s Ready, Set, Go, with more than 20 partners representing city government, philanthropy and nonprofit organizations, exemplifies a cross-agency commitment to improving the systems that support families and children and improving school readiness in New Orleans.
