If a charter’s contract runs out, the board will vote on whether or not to renew it. In the past, the decision has been the superintendent’s and could only be overridden by a 2/3 majority veto by the board. This system caused controversy in November with the closing of Craig and Coghill charter schools.
OPEN supports this bill because it places decisions in the hands of the board members, who answer more directly to the people.
