The word “communications” is a necessarily broad term, referring to a range of different strategies and activities. In the social justice world we communicate about issues, big ideas, specific policies, organizations, aspirations, fundraising needs, and so on. While it seems obvious, it’s important that all of these communications support and complement each other strategically. Branding, crisis communications, campaign communications and the like are all crucial strategies, and they don’t exist on their own. They should add up to something bigger and longer term: an effort to move hearts, minds, and policy in the same direction over time.
